RS 2 Planet Money Katy Perry

This blog post is my take on the podcast "The Friday Podcast: Katy Perry's Perfect Year".  This podcast was recored on January 20, 2012 on Planet Money.  The main point of this podcast is how Katy Perry made bank in 2011.  She had five number one hits in 2011 the most since Michael Jackson had this many number one singles.  Katy Perry having five number one singles was surprising to me.  They also talk about have record companies been planning how to make more money now that everyone downloads music for free online.  The record companies dont make as much money as they use too.
The record companies made up a deal called the 360 deal so the record companies make money off the artist toures, merchandise, and record sales.  But most of the time the record companies made more off the toures and merchandise, not the record sales.  There is only three major recording labels today.
The podcast people say that the record companies are not really record companies anyone they are more like parters with the artistes.  This all has to do with economics.  I think Professor Engel assigned us to listen to this podcast because it talks about an economic standpoint in real life.  Who knew if Katy Perry kissed a girl, everyone would like it.........

RS1 HOW TO BE A GENIUS

This blog post is my take on the article “How to Be a Genius” by David Dobbs. This article appeared in the September 2006 edition of the New Scientist.  The main point of this article is that genius are not innate or born, they work very hard to become a genius.  They have to work twice or more as hard as an average person to become this great.  It’s all about setting your mind to a goal, also people who help and encourage you to do bigger and better things.  “Instead, as the American inventor Thomas Edison said, genius is 99 per cent perspiration - or, to be truer to the data, perhaps 1 per cent inspiration, 29 per cent good instruction and encouragement, and 70 per cent perspiration.”  This article was a little surprising to me because I figured geniuses were just born but according to this article they are not.  The authors first thinks that talent is all natural, but later in life he realizes you have to work for it to have great talent.  The authors views talent as effort (investment & time) and support around the person to become great.  The author claims are more important than innate talent is effort (investment & time) and support around the person to become great.  Stephen Hawking view those that boast about their IQ are losers.  The author states that hard work leading to success could encourage you, or overwhelm you because it could encourage to bigger and better things or it can make you overwhelmed because everyone is counting on you to do bigger and better things.  I am both encouraged and overwhelm by success because once I succeed I want keep succeeding but get overwhelmed.  I think you assigned this reading to open up our eyes to encourage us to better and try more in college.  Also make us think what we can to do to be better and learn what other did to be good at what they do.
